Teacher Association Project Awards

The Trust supports Teacher Associations to undertake small-scale projects that aim to enhance English teaching in public education systems

About the grants

Our Teacher Association Project Award Scheme supports ELT Teacher Associations to engage in small-scale projects, with an overall aim of enhancement of English teaching in public education systems in low- and middle-income countries. The scheme has expanded over the last few years. The scheme has expanded over the last few years and will have funding for up 15 projects in 2024 and 2025.

Who can apply?

Any Teacher Association in a low- or middle-income country with an idea for an ELT-related project that has a clear local goal and/or which is trying to enable an aspect of national provision to ‘work better’ in a local context.

Over the last five years we have funded projects in these countries:

When can we apply?

What are the particular areas of interest to Hornby?

  • The Classroom as the Focus – initiatives by teachers/groups of teachers independent of TAs (teachers find ‘local solutions’ to ‘local problems’ through sharing of practices, or adapted materials between teachers within a local area, or through locally focussed exploratory action research (EAR)).
  • Developing more horizontal/distributed TA leadership and greater membership involvement (implement new models of leadership and/or involve TA members more fully in all aspects of TA decision-making).
  • Developing TA connections with other key players in their wider English education system, for example pre- and in-service teacher educators (a TA works with teacher educators and/or schools to develop and provide activities that support the effective induction of newly recruited teachers).

What kind of applications get preference?

Those that:

  • focus on the local needs of learners and teachers
  • support the development of local solutions to classroom challenges in your context
  • stimulate contextually appropriate thinking on ELT methodology, materials, assessment, etc.
  • involve high levels of collaboration
  • draw on successful examples of other TA projects.
